A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

THERE IS A COMMON RITE (IF YOU WILL) THAT HAS BECOME QUITE POPULAR IN THE WEDDING WORLD. IT IS SIMPLE ENOUGH: A CROSS WITH THREE STRANDS OR CORDS. TWO OF THE STRANDS LOOK THE SAME BUT ARE YET DISTINCTLY SEPARATE. THE THIRD CORD IS GOD, THE HOLY TRINITY. 

IN THE CHRISTIAN RITE, MARRIAGE IS SEEN AS A UNION BETWEEN TWO SOULS IN BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT. DECLARING MARRIAGE NOT A SACRAMENT, THE LUTHERAN TRADITION SEES MARRIAGE AS A BLESSED LEGAL ESTATE.
