THERE IS A COMMON RITE (IF YOU WILL) THAT HAS BECOME QUITE POPULAR IN THE WEDDING WORLD. IT IS SIMPLE ENOUGH: A CROSS WITH THREE STRANDS OR CORDS. TWO OF THE STRANDS LOOK THE SAME BUT ARE YET DISTINCTLY SEPARATE. THE THIRD CORD IS GOD, THE HOLY TRINITY.
IN THE CHRISTIAN RITE, MARRIAGE IS SEEN AS A UNION BETWEEN TWO SOULS IN BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT. DECLARING MARRIAGE NOT A SACRAMENT, THE LUTHERAN TRADITION SEES MARRIAGE AS A BLESSED LEGAL ESTATE.
Through prayer and discernment over the course of a few meetings, couples meet with the pastor to discuss what marriage is, explore the meaning of the vows, and understand each others' spirituality.
